Health and Safety
KMC has an excellent historical safety record and we work with our employees to continually set high safety standards. New employees receive a thorough orientation that primarily focuses on maintaining a safe work environment. Further to this, our comprehensive Safety Manual details policies and procedures for our main activities and provides reinforcement to our on-the-job training.
In 2002, we introduced a behavioral-based safety program (PASS) to further improve the company’s safety performance. Employee acceptance of the program was outstanding and continues to result in a positive improvement to safety performance.
We are an active member in the Partners in Injury Reduction program in partnership with the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) and have developed an effective Return to Work program fully supported by the WCB.
The Alberta Mine Safety Association statistics for all mines in Alberta indicate a Reportable Injury Frequency (RIF) rate for 2006 of 1.82. For 2005 and 2006 our RIF rate decreased to 0.61 from a five year average of 0.90. It is our goal to reduce this number even further.
On May 9, 2006 KMC employees reached a significant milestone by achieving one million hours worked without a lost-time incident. This goal was achieved through the teamwork and dedication of our employees focusing towards our operating procedures, risk assessments, and by hazard analysis within our working environment.

KMC has received recognition in the industry for its efforts in improving and promoting a safe working environment. In January 2006, KMC was awarded the Suncor President’s Operating Excellence Award in recognition of employees and contractors who achieve the highest standards of performance in Environment, Health and Safety.
