General Accountabilities:
Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Shop Manager is accountable for the overall operations of the heavy equipment maintenance shop, including client equipment reliability, retail client repair work, field retail work, and facility maintenance all while ensuring the safe and effective use of maintenance standards, procedures and practices.

The Shop Manager is responsible for promoting the KMC safety culture, adhering to all provincial and federal laws, KMC policy, internal controls and practices, and maintaining the highest level of professionalism, and uphold the values of KMC Mining.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Assist in the business development of a heavy equipment retail shop and field repair business, including promoting the maintenance services to current and future clients;
  • Respond to client requests by understanding needs, diagnosing and troubleshooting problems, estimating job costs, providing estimates and quotes and ensuring work is executed in an efficient, reliable and safe manner;
  • Assist in the preparation of accurate and timely forecasts, pricing, estimates and market intelligence of services;
  • Evaluate customer needs, promote and sell products and services to meet those needs and provide quality solutions to address customer needs;
  • Ensure the achievement of profitable service revenue targets;
  • Ensure all sales documents and customer agreements are completed in a consistent, accurate and timely manner;
  • Work on developing and maintaining long term strategic partnerships with clients;
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining a standard active equipment list, equipment operating manuals, and a preventative maintenance program;
  • Assist in the development of maintenance budget by providing input relative to policy, costs and established metrics;
  • Along with purchasing, where possible, help develop sole sourcing arrangements with suppliers;
  • Conduct utilization and return on investment analysis for existing and new purchases to ensure that the Company invests in the appropriate type and quantity of equipment;
  • Ensure all equipment is in compliance with safety standards and operating manual guidelines;
  • Responsible for the safeguarding of company assets;
  • Required to address equipment related issues and provide solutions to the field staff;
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of the maintenance management system;
  • Responsible for making recommendations and obtaining quotes for facility maintenance (office, shop and yard);
  • Motivate, support and manage employees including providing performance reviews, improvement plants, career development, and succession planning;
  • Plan, schedule and supervise the work of mechanics, welders, laborer’s and other shop and field employees;
  • Assist mechanics and other traditional and non-traditional trades with troubleshooting and problem solving;
  • Ensure daily work orders are completed;
  • Arrange all outside maintenance and warranty work to be completed on company equipment;
  • Perform administrative duties such as verifying time cards, interviewing potential employees, employee performance management;
  • Analyze maintenance costs and provide recommendations on fleet utilization and replacement, where applicable;
  • Communicate maintenance requirements to ensure maximum efficiency and implement corrective actions as required;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:
Formal Education *

  • Grade 12 education or equivalency
  • Valid Alberta Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician Certificate or an
  • Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyman Heavy Duty Equipment Technician

Work Experience

  • Preference for 5 or more years in a Maintenance leadership position within the mining industry
  • Preference for 5 or more year’s experience in retail repair work for oil and gas and/or Mining companies
  • Supervision experience dealing with Mining Equipment and Maintenance

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and mining systems
  • Ability to estimate retail work
  • Thorough knowledge of equipment, equipment performance and the mining environment
  • A strong attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizing, attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Collaborative and performance orientated
